The Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan condemns death of innocent civilians in international waters.

Hundreds of civilians from more than forty nations, including many U.S. citizens, tried to help the people of Gaza. During this humanitarian effort precious human lives were lost. An American citizen is also killed because of this Israeli action on high seas.

1988 Convention for the suppression of unlawful acts of violence against the safety of maritime navigation (SUA Convention) requires nations to take appropriate measures to prevent acts that may threaten passengers and crews.

CIOM and its Imam's Committee joins worldwide condemnation of this unnecessary lethal force used against those who only sought to bring relief supplies to the long suffering people of Gaza.

We remind Obama Administration to reaffirm our values that uphold peace and justice. 1.5 million Gazans are living, under Israeli siege, with deplorable conditions for many years. It is time the United States help find peaceful solution, as an honest broker, to the conflict in the Holy Land.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 5, 2010

What:

On the day of the U.S. District Court hearing in Detroit for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old charged with attempting to detonate an explosive device on Northwest Airlines flight 253, Michigan's Muslim community leaders will stand together to voice their strong opposition to extremists.

According to Islamic teachings, 'killing one innocent person is like killing all ofmankind.' The Muslim American community condemns all acts of terrorism as crimes against humanity, and we support our law enforcement agencies in their efforts to protect our fellow citizens from such acts of violence while conserving civil rights. We stand together to defeat the threat of Alqaeda and are committed to the security of the people of this great nation.

We call for all faiths to join Muslims across the nation to pray for peace and justice.

Muslim Americans will participate in a rally later to demonstrate against the committing of acts of terror and the taking innocent lives in the name of their peaceful faith.

When:

Friday, January 8th, 2010, 9:30 a.m.Friday is a day of congregational prayers. The imams will speak to the media before the Friday sermon, scheduled at mid-afternoon in the area mosques.

Area Muslims Fear Backlash After Ft. Hood

Click here for the full article including the audio

(Michigan Radio) - Labib Cheaito owns a Halal sub shop on Warren Avenue in Dearborn.

He says when it was reported that Army Major Nidal Hasan was a Muslim, an old fear returned.

"We just started getting those feelings again, like what happened September 11," he says.

"Always when something happens, from an Arab Muslim American, it gives the idea or the picture that that's how everybody are.... It's like if a black American does something in the area or in Detroit, that's the picture they get for all the black people. And same thing is happening with us."

Cheaito says he expects the uneasiness in the community will fade once the Fort Hood incident is out of the headlines.

But leaders in the Muslim community are not taking any chances that their faith be misunderstood.

"Islam is a faith of peace," Imam Steve Elturk of the Islamic Organization of North America said at a press conference Friday.

"Muslims, the adherents to this faith, are supposed to live in peace within themselves and also without, among the community," he said. "So you can't call a Muslim a true Muslim if he acts heinous sin - atrocities like the one just committed by Major Hasan."
