(WARREN, MI 8/31/2010) --- As part of President Barack Obama’s call to all Americans to make September 11 an annual National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Council of Islamic Organizations of Michigan (CIOM) will join organizations from across metro-Detroit for Acts of Kindness (A-OK) Detroit: A Weekend of Remembrance and Restoration.

On Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12, during the time of the Eid festival, CIOM volunteers will join Michigan’s interfaith community in rising above prejudice and hatred to spend the anniversary of 9/11 in service to our city and neighbors.  People of different faiths, ethnic backgrounds, and races will work together to bring recovery and renewal to Detroit while learning they have much in common.  Volunteers will be on hand to take part in community service projects ranging from environmental and life skills education, to restoring a mural at the Boys & Girls Club to clean-up projects around the city.

The weekend is part of CIOM’s greater commitment to service in Michigan and its support for the national “Muslim Serve” campaign.  Last summer, American Muslims participated in more than 3,500 community service projects all around the country as part of President Obama's "United We Serve" campaign. "Muslim Serve" is about demonstrating how our Islamic values inspire us to serve humanity, and is meant to highlight the great contributions that the Muslim community has provided and continues to provide our great nation.

What:

On the day of the U.S. District Court hearing in Detroit for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old charged with attempting to detonate an explosive device on Northwest Airlines flight 253, Michigan's Muslim community leaders will stand together to voice their strong opposition to extremists.

According to Islamic teachings, 'killing one innocent person is like killing all ofmankind.' The Muslim American community condemns all acts of terrorism as crimes against humanity, and we support our law enforcement agencies in their efforts to protect our fellow citizens from such acts of violence while conserving civil rights. We stand together to defeat the threat of Alqaeda and are committed to the security of the people of this great nation.

We call for all faiths to join Muslims across the nation to pray for peace and justice.

Muslim Americans will participate in a rally later to demonstrate against the committing of acts of terror and the taking innocent lives in the name of their peaceful faith.

Area Muslims Fear Backlash After Ft. Hood

Click here for the full article including the audio

(Michigan Radio) - Labib Cheaito owns a Halal sub shop on Warren Avenue in Dearborn.

He says when it was reported that Army Major Nidal Hasan was a Muslim, an old fear returned.

"We just started getting those feelings again, like what happened September 11," he says.

"Always when something happens, from an Arab Muslim American, it gives the idea or the picture that that's how everybody are.... It's like if a black American does something in the area or in Detroit, that's the picture they get for all the black people. And same thing is happening with us."

Cheaito says he expects the uneasiness in the community will fade once the Fort Hood incident is out of the headlines.

But leaders in the Muslim community are not taking any chances that their faith be misunderstood.

"Islam is a faith of peace," Imam Steve Elturk of the Islamic Organization of North America said at a press conference Friday.

"Muslims, the adherents to this faith, are supposed to live in peace within themselves and also without, among the community," he said. "So you can't call a Muslim a true Muslim if he acts heinous sin - atrocities like the one just committed by Major Hasan."
